Please print this and bring it with you.I will be joining forces on a few tunes with Sacramento’s own Ukulele Rob so we hope to see some of you there. The 8th Annual was held last weekend in Cerritos, California. The crowd may have been slightly smaller than years past but it was jammed packed with enthusiasm and ukulele awesomeness. The Friday night “Club Night” was definitely missed as well as the late night jamming at the Sheraton but all in all it was a wonderful festival. This was the first year that the peeps from were in attendance.

They had an open mic with numerous enthusiasts and performers to mesmerize the captive audience. Thanks to Ricdoug for providing the sound equipment. Here are a few pics from the event. Next stop: this weekend in the Napa Valley.

I’m really excited about the opportunity to contribute to this very important project.

You may already be familiar with the good works of. The charity is based in Israel and run by who teaches ukulele to Jewish and Arab kids and brings them together in a ukulele orchestra.

The goal is to create friendships and links between otherwise entirely separate communities.Ukuleles for Peace work in two towns -where it has been hugely successful. There are even discussions about the group performing at the.But they do need money to keep up the good work and, hopefully, expand into other towns in the region. To that end, our good friend Al ( Woodshed from ) contacted me to see if I would be interested in transcribing something specifically for this e-book of tabs.

Of course, I was honored to participate and decided to transcribe one of Brian Hefferan’s ragtime arrangements, Cotton Eye Joe. Woodshed was able to get together a number of elite online ukulele performers and tabbers and the result is an e-book of tunes from around the world arranged for ukulele. It features tabs/arrangements from Brian Hefferan, James Hill, Ken Middleton, Mark Kailana Nelson, and Wilfried Welti in addition to me. And the money goes directly to Ukuleles for Peace.I hope you can find it in your heart to contribute to this project. It is simply amazing how the power of music and the ukulele can make such a positive impact on these children’s lives. If you can’t afford it, you can help even more by spreading the word about and the e-book by talking about it on blogs, forums, MySpace, Facebook, Live Journal and anywhere you can find people who might listen. Thanks so much and Happy Holidays to all of you. The 7th Annual Southern California Ukulele Festival was another great success this past weekend. Only a few light showers had people scrambling about for a bit but it cleared up rather nicely.

I had the opportunity to meet many new people, match faces with screen names and visit with old friends as well. Among the new Ohana were Joe and Kristen Souza of. Such wonderful people. They sent the picture below with me and Bruddah Mark outside Mark’s booth. Not only is MGM the nicest guy around but he has to be the hardest working person at theses festivals. Not only does he have to pack all those ukes and ship them to the festival to start with, but he then has to transport them, unpack and setup at one location for Club Night, pack them back up at the end of the night, set em up again the next morning and then pack em all up again at the end of the festival.

I’m exhausted just thinking about it.This was my first time as a performer on the day stage and I was very pleased with the way the new Dominator spruce top tenor performed. From where I was onstage it sounded fabulous coming through the house system and it really delivered what I was asking from it. A special thanks to ke leo and misguided musician for recording it on video. It was definitely a “live” performance with a few clams here and there but I think there were a few good spots as well. I opened with Touch followed by Going to California and Shirley T.

Then I brought Konabob and John Rockwell up to do Guava Jam, TNC and closed the set with Gypsy Ukulele. Once Ke leo has had an opportunity to edit the video he plans to send it to me for uploading to the site.Once back at the hotel Bruddah Mark, Charlie, Rockwell, Peter Mari, Preston from Salt Lake and a few others jammed inside the bar until they closed up and cleared us out.

Ke leo also got a couple numbers on video that he should be able to see soon. The 15th Annual Ukulele Festival of Northern California was yesterday in Hayward California. It was a beautiful day for a ukulele festival and as usual it seemed a good time was had by all. I got to meet up with some old friends and also got to meet a few new friends that are part of the (UU). UU is a relatively new website dedicated to promoting the Aloha spirit which seems to go hand in hand with this incredible addictive instrument we know as the ukulele.

I was fairly relaxed by the time I hit the stage as I opened with Jake’s Blue Roses Falling. Then I got a little tense as I worked my way through my arrangement of George Harrison’s Something. It was just a short ten minute slot so I needed a short one to finish with and I chose the Star Spangled Banner. I left the stage feeling like I did a decent job of controlling my nerves and getting through the set. I wasn’t able to capture any video on my own but I should be receiving the footage in the next few days or so. I’ll post some videos once I have the DVD in hand. In the meantime, here are a few pics from the show.

I attended the Ukulele Festival of Northern California this past weekend. Toebone and I hooked up on Saturday for the workshops and concert at DaSilva Ukulele Co. And then took in the Uke Fest in Hayward on Sunday.

The weather was good but the sun was hotter than I realized. Should have brought the sun screen.

I ended up getting burned pretty good.It was great to see Tonya, Dave from Petaluma, Gary Peare of Ukulelia and Tiki King again. We missed Tom B., Andy Andrews and Kona Bob as they were in New York. Got to meet some new folks and it was a pleasure to meet Ken Potts from KP Ukulele in person. He spent a fair amount of time critiquing the mahogany tenor I made last October. Most of my time was spent outside in the courtyard either jamming or just visiting with folks. I caught the last three performers in the auditorium including Steven Espaniola and Bryan Tolentino and the Side Order Band. The auditorium was very hot and stuffy with very little circulation.

I had to go outside and get some water and fresh air and missed the last two songs, however the music was piped to the outside. Steven's voice was sounding great and Bryan and SOB backed him up. Bryan was great as usual. It was a great ukulele weekend but the highlight for me was when, during the evening concert at DaSilva's, Bryan invited me to join him on stage to play the title track from his CD, Ka `Ukulele Lele, that I had transcribed a couple of months back. It was a very nice gesture from a very gracious person. Thank you Bryan. Here is a video of from the concert. I attended the Southern California Ukulele Festival (SCUF) this past weekend and had a great time meeting some of the folks from the various forums and bulletin boards.

The workshops were fun, the performances were great and the pulled pork was pretty good too. There just isn't enough time in a one day event to really relax and take it all in. It was over before I knew it. I only took a few pictures and they didn't come out so I don't have any to share.Herb Ohta Jr.

And Daniel Ho closed the show with an awesome performance but one performer who really impressed me was the young 16 year old Brittni Paiva. She performed on ukulele and slack key guitar and played both equally as well. She was fabulous. If you don't have her CD I would highly recommend it. You can visit here homepage at and order one online.I haven't had a lot of time to work on the tenor but I have posted a couple more progress pics on my for those interested.

9/6/2003 - I have been working on transcribing Jake Shimabukuro's tribute to George Harrison entitled 'Something' that he recorded on the CD 'The Art of Solo Ukulele'. I have also enlisted the services of a professional transcriber and I will receive his input soon. However, out of respect to him I will not be posting his work on this site. The version that I am posting today is my interpretation of the first verse and chorus sections. I have personally met and spoke with Jake regarding the tuning of his tenor ukulele and he tells me that he uses strictly the standard G-C-E-A tuning with a high G. However, when I slow this piece down and analyze the notes, both myself and the professional transcriber agree, it appears that the low G is present in the recording. So the files below are based on the low G tuning.

UPDATE: I have talked with Jake about his tuning again and he indeed uses what's known as re-entrant or tuning with a high G string. On 'The Art of Solo Ukulele' CD Jake tuned his Kamaka down a full step to F,Bb,D,G and that is why I was hearing lower notes on my GCEA tuned ukulele. If I ever get time I will transcribe them again in re-entrant tuning.

I have a Powertab (PT) file as well as a PDF file available at the links below. If you don't have PT then get it.

It is FREE and a great tool for creating and playing back transcriptions in addition to viewing them and the printouts are very professional. I also plan to do more ukulele transcriptions in the PT format.

Drop me an and let me know what you think. Also, please note that Jake plays in free time accelerating and ritarding as he sees fit. This is hard to reproduce in a tab editor that requires precise timing. I have tried my best to emmulate the timing/feel of the song but it will be up to the performer to feel the mood of the piece. So this will get you started while I finish the transcription. Good luck and most of all Have Fun!

Keep strumming - Dominator!I have been tinkering with the ukelele for about 3 weeks a year for the past few years on our vacations to Kauai. I purchased a Martin Backpacker uke 2 years ago and even though it stays in tune and sounds Ok the scale is too short for me to play in the higher registers. I played a Tenor Fluke while in Kaua'i in December 2001 and decided then to purchase one early in 2002.

I have had my Lava Tenor Fluke for several months and just got back from this years trip to Kauai. I really enjoyed the Fluke. It was the only time I really spent any time getting to know it.

The main reason I wanted the Fluke was to be able to use the low G set of strings like Herb Ohta used on his Ukulele Bach CD. I have spent the last couple of evenings transcribing the entire piece of 'Jesus Joy of Man's Desiring' from that CD. Hope you enjoy this one. Right click and choose 'save link target as' to download the powertab file to your hard drive.

If it proves to be of any benefit to you drop me a line and let me know. I plan to add some other tunes soon.
